Elders Group Tries Bridging the Climatic Generation Gap” by James Kanter The New York Times

This article was about “Elders” who come together to discuss the importance of changing our ways, before the climatic takes a turn for the worse. The Elders are a group of people from the 20th century including  ”Archbishop Tutu of South Africa, former President Jimmy Carter, and Mary Robinson, a former Irish president.” They have realized the severity of the global warming issue and have made a point to educate the new generations, and let us know what may result from mistakes made in the past century, and have continued through today.

The subject of the article is the older generation warning the new generation about global warming effects. The occasion is right now, all over the world. The Elders, leaders from many different countries, met in Istanbul to discuss the importance of the issue. The audience, I think, is everyone. The Elders are trying to warn everyone everywhere, that we need to take action. The purpose for writing the article was to give “a rather late wake up call for all humanity to behave in a more responsible manner,” said Lahkdar Brahimi, and to raise public conciousness. The speaker of this piece was James Kanter who used the words and actions of the Elders to speak urgently and a bit abruptly in the article. The tone of the article would have to be alert and admonishing. The Elders really want their opinions to be taken seriously and their cautionary tone was also seen in the article.
